Every face has a 1 in 6 chance — 16.7% each. Average roll: 3.5. Two dice average 7, and 7 turns up six times as often as 2 or 12.
The d6 is the only die most households own, and the only one that needs no explanation. It has been made from bone, wood, ivory and plastic for thousands of years, and the modern pip layout has barely changed since Roman examples that would still be legal in a board game today.
It is also the busiest die in tabletop gaming: board game movement, Yahtzee scoring, craps, Farkle, and in DnD everything from a shortsword slash to the eight dice of a Fireball.
Pick up any standard die and check: 1 is opposite 6, 2 is opposite 5, 3 is opposite 4. Every pair sums to seven. This is not a rule of any game, it is a manufacturing convention thousands of years old, and it has a practical effect — it spreads the drilled pip cavities as evenly as possible, so the die comes out closer to balanced than an arbitrary arrangement would.
There is a second, subtler convention. Hold a die so that 1, 2 and 3 all meet at one corner. If they read counterclockwise you have a right-handed die, which is the Western standard. If they read clockwise it is left-handed, which is common in Chinese and Japanese dice. Both are perfectly fair; they are mirror images of each other.
Casino dice are made to a tolerance most players never think about. They are cut with sharp, square edges rather than rounded ones, machined flat to a fraction of a millimetre, made from translucent cellulose so that tampering shows, and their pips are drilled and then backfilled with paint of the same density as the material removed. Many carry serial numbers and are retired after a few hours of play.
The dice in a board game box are injection-moulded with rounded corners and pips that are simply hollows in the plastic. That leaves the six face very slightly lighter than the one face, and the rounded edges make the die roll longer and more chaotically. In practice the bias is far too small to notice across a game night — but it is real, and it is the reason precision dice exist at all.
A single d6 is flat: every number is equally likely. Two d6 are not. There is only one way to roll a 2 and only one way to roll a 12, but six different ways to roll a 7. That is why Monopoly clusters its expensive properties six to eight squares past the jail, why Settlers of Catan puts the fattest payouts on 6 and 8, and why rolling a 7 in that game costs you rather than pays you.
It also explains why DnD rolls character stats with 4d6 and drops the lowest rather than using a single die with a wider range: piles of small dice produce reliable, capable heroes, while single big dice produce wild ones.

Measurably, yes. Casino dice have sharp square edges, tight machining tolerances, and pips backfilled with paint of the same density as the plastic drilled out. Ordinary moulded dice have rounded corners and hollow pips, which leaves the six face fractionally lighter. The difference is far too small to see over a game night, but it is why precision dice exist.
Because there are more ways to make it. Six of the thirty-six possible combinations total 7, against only one each for 2 and 12. That gives 7 a 16.7% chance and the two extremes about 2.8% each.
