Ask a yes-or-no question, then shake.
Shaking a Magic 8 Ball is a way of asking yourself a question out loud. The ball has no opinion — it has a handful of printed sentences and a die that stops on one of them — but the half-second between the shake and the answer surfacing is usually long enough to notice which answer you were hoping for. That is the whole trick, and it has worked since 1950.
This one behaves like the object. Type the question — it stays in the box, on your screen, and goes nowhere — then shake the ball or press the button and wait for the printed 8 to give way to the blue disc. Ask it again as many times as you like; the ball has never minded being asked twice.
An icosahedron: a many-faced white plastic solid, floating in an inner cylinder of dark blue alcohol dye. It is the same shape as the d20 in a dice bag, with a sentence on each face instead of a number. The dye is opaque enough to hide the die completely, so an answer only exists once a face has drifted flat against the little window in the base.
That delay is the reason the toy feels like it is thinking. The liquid is thin enough to let the die tumble and thick enough to slow it to a crawl, so the answer arrives at the pace of a considered reply rather than a switch being flipped. This page waits with you for the same reason — the answer is drawn the instant you shake, but it takes its time surfacing.
A real ball is a soft touch. Every face on it is equally likely, but the answers are not worded evenly — twice as many of them agree with you as disagree, so a shake says some kind of yes about half the time and a flat no only a quarter. The die was never rigged; the printing was.
This one is balanced instead. There are as many yes answers as no answers, and as many that refuse to commit, so all three land equally often and nothing is quietly weighted towards telling you what you want to hear. Which answers those are is not printed here on purpose — you find out by asking.
Mostly because the real one is in a drawer somewhere, and a magic 8 ball is a thing you want at the exact moment you cannot find it. A browser tab weighs nothing, works the same on a phone at a bus stop as on a laptop, and can be put on a shared screen so a whole group watches the answer come up — which is the half of the ritual that a plastic ball on your own desk cannot do.
It also shakes on demand. No liquid to wait on, no scratched window to squint through, and the answer is set in type rather than half-legible through blue dye at an angle. Whether you write it magic 8 ball, magic eight ball or magic 8-ball, this is the same toy with the shaking made easier.
Not from a toy company. Albert Carter grew up watching his mother, a Cincinnati clairvoyant, answer clients from a device she called a spirit writer, and in the 1940s he built a sealed tube that produced written answers the same way. His brother-in-law kept the idea alive after Carter died, and in 1950 Brunswick Billiards asked for it in the shape of an eight ball to promote the company. The casing was an advertisement; everything that matters is the die and the dye. Mattel has made it since 1971.
Exactly the way the dice here do. A number comes out of the browser's cryptographically secure generator, taken with rejection sampling so that no answer gets a fractionally larger slice than the others, and that number picks the answer. The shake is told what to reveal afterwards — it never decides anything. How it works walks through the same function line by line.
Your question is not involved either. What you type stays in the box in front of you: it is never read, never stored and never sent anywhere, because there is nowhere for it to go. The box is there because writing the question down is most of what makes the answer feel like an answer.
Nothing at all. The box is not connected to anything — the text is not read, not saved, and not sent to a server, and it is gone when you close the tab. It is there because a question you have actually written down is a sharper question than one you were vaguely holding in your head.
Yes, in both senses. Each shake draws an answer using your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, with rejection sampling so none is favoured — the same source every dice roll on this site uses. And the answers are evenly split between yes, no and ask-again, so the outcome is not quietly weighted towards agreeing with you the way the classic wording is.
It can, and it should. Each shake is independent of the last one, so the same answer twice — or three times — will happen sometimes. A version that refused to repeat itself would be less random, not more.

No, and yes. This is the fortune-telling toy, not the black ball you sink last in a game of eight-ball pool — you cannot play pool with it and it will not tell you how to. But the toy is deliberately made to look like that pool ball: Brunswick Billiards commissioned the casing in 1950 to advertise the company, so the shape and the printed 8 are borrowed straight from the game.
A yes-or-no one. The answers only fit questions shaped like "should I", "will they", "is it worth it" — ask an open question and every possible reply is nonsense. The useful part is not the answer anyway: it is noticing whether you are disappointed by it.
